Dean Transition

After a decade of leadership from Janet A. Weiss, the corner office welcomed Dean Carol A. Fierke on September 1. Previously the chair of the U-M chemistry department, Carol brings to Rackham a strong commitment to continue improving graduate education and recruit the best scholars to the University of Michigan.

Carol’s predecessor, Janet A. Weiss, worked to ensure that Rackham students are successful while in graduate school and well prepared for their future careers. Janet knew that graduate students are best served when Rackham works in partnership with faculty and academic leaders across campus. The new programs developed under her leadership have resulted in increased doctoral completion rates, the sustaining of a diverse graduate community, reduced debt load for Ph.D. students, and robust interdisciplinary research and scholarship.
